GUWAHATI, April 30 - An advanced and scalable rural composting system was launched on Sunday at a farm in Makeli village of Chaygaon in Kamrup district by EcDEESHA Foundation of Gujarat with support from Hygiea Service of Gujarat and Bharat Janvigyan Jatha, Assam unit.
The project was officially inaugurated by Samudranarayan Das, the village chief of Makeli in the presence of senior social workers Satyen Talukdar and RK Sharma, besides several other dignitaries and local villagers.
The new composting technology developed by noted scientist Arunav Misra, CEO of Hygiea Service, with logistic and technical support from EcDEESHA Enterprise and EcDEESHA Foundation, can convert all kinds of biodegradable organic solid waste into nutritious soil conditioner in less than two weeks.
Besides, it can extract the water content of the waste into leachate which can be used not only as liquid manure but also as a natural insecticide as well as a nutritious feed in fisheries.
The system will ensure a total value conversion of all organic wastes collected from farms and households and the byproducts, including both dry and liquid composts. Then it will be distributed to the villagers participating in this rural community-based composting model.
A meeting organised along with the launch of the composting system was addressed by Mowsam Hazarika, Assistant Director of Agriculture of the Directorate of Agriculture, Assam, Kiran Kalita, retired teacher and president of the local panchayat committee, Ramen Dutta, founder president of Assam People�s Welfare Association of Delhi NCR region who is also a trustee of EcDEESHA Foundation, and Arunav Misra, the scientist who has developed the system after ten years of research.
Dr Manoj Kumar Patowary, secretary of Bharat Jan Bigyan Jatha, Assam unit, was also present on the occasion.
