Model code of conduct for GPC polls issued

GUWAHATI, March 2 - The election committee of Guwahati Press Club (GPC) today issued the model code of conduct (MCC) for the candidates of the election scheduled to be held on March 12. Accordingly, the election committee announced that the campaigning process will end 24 hours before polling.

The MCC bars the candidates from indulging in any corrupt and negative campaigning. They also cannot indulge in character assassination of each other.

The MCC bars candidates and their supporters from making derogatory remarks against anyone without any basis. Candidature of candidates will be cancelled if their activities smack of racial, communal and sexual discrimination.

If there is any written complaint regarding some illegal activity against any candidate, the election committee and the returning officer, after proper deliberations, will cancel the candidature of the candidate concerned.

�Any violation of the rule related to the bar on campaigning would be dealt with by the election committee or returning officer firmly and the decision of the election committee or returning officer on the issue would be final and binding on all concerned. The decision of the election committee and the returning officer would be final and binding on all the candidates in the fray in the GPC election, 2020,� the MCC read.

Addressing a press conference here, election returning officer Bijon Kumar Mahajan urged all voters to exercise their democratic right on the day of election. Presiding officer Ajit Patowary and other members of the election committee were present at the press conference.
