Modalities to be ready by Dec: CM

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Oct 22 Terming an improved law and order as the State Governments biggest success in the past couple of years, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today said that the modalities for the much-awaited peace talks with the ULFA would be ready by December.

The States law-and-order situation has improved a lot in the past two years and the credit goes to the Government for addressing the vexed insurgency problem in a holistic manner. The Centre has given us the go-ahead for the proposed peace talks with the ULFA and the modalities should be ready by December, Gogoi said at a press conference.

Terming as positive the feedback from the jailed ULFA leaders to peace interlocutor PC Haldar, the Chief Minister said that things were unfolding in the desired manner. Things are moving in the right direction and we are hopeful of starting a formal dialogue soon, he said.

Gogoi said that despite the adverse law and order and a bad economy when the Congress Government assumed power ten years back, the focus all along had been on development. Claiming that the development process was gaining momentum in the State, he said that infrastructure like roads and bridges, rural development and education were some of the key thrust areas of the Government.

Gogoi said that a total of 14,286 km of roads had been completed in the State with work in progress on a stretch of 10,000 km. Similarly, 1,497 bridges had been built and construction of another 1,600 was on.
