Mobile Internet services restored in State

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Dec 20 - Mobile Internet services were restored in the State almost nine days after services were suspended in the State subsequent to anti-CAB (now CAA) protests gaining momentum across the State that also led to acts of violence at various places.

The Gauhati High Court had, on Thursday, ordered for resumption of mobile Internet services in response to several PILs filed.

Meanwhile, the State government today filed a petition asking the court to review its Thursday order and provide specific timing of the mobile Internet service and also allow the State authorities to take steps for restraining such services in the night hours for a few days, to which the court has issued notices to the review petitioners and fixed the matter for January 2, 2020.

With mobile Internet services restored, people heaved a sigh of relief. Suspension of Internet services had affected the day-to-day operations of various sectors, including banks. Apart from putting a check at the activities of the netizens, livelihood avenues of many, especially the cab operators, were brought to a standstill. Further, it also affected the access to basic civic amenities, including power supply.

Meanwhile, Assam Police in its tweet has urged the citizens to use the mobile Internet, especially social media, judiciously. We request citizens to be cautious while posting or sharing unverified/provocative information on social media, the Assam Police twitted.

We are looking forward to your continued support in ensuring peace and harmony in the State, the tweet added.

Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) GP Singh also took to Twitter sharing a post which read: Friends, the mobile Internet services are being restored to enable people to go about life in a normal manner. Please be wise in writing, forwarding posts on various social media platforms. Lets build a stronger Assam together. Looking forward to continued support.
