Mobile internet restored in Shillong

SHILLONG, June 13 - With the law and order situation slowly getting back to normal, mobile Internet service has finally been restored in the Meghalaya State Capital Shillong. Curfew timing was also further relaxed.

Mobile Internet service was suspended on June 1, a day after the violence broke out in the State Capital. There were fake news being spread about inter-community violence, which was being circulated across the State and country through social messaging apps like WhatsApp and other platforms.

However, this afternoon the services were restored. Internet was available in the State Capital for broadband users all this while. Briefly, the district administration also suspended SMS services, but was quickly restored as students faced problem related to admissions in different educational institutions across the country.

SMS service is required for online payment of admission fees as One Time Passwords (OTP) is sent by banks through SMSes. On restoration of Internet service a review meeting was held and after assessment it was found that the services could be restored. �Students were complaining due to the mobile Internet services blockade and so the district administration restored it,� an official said.

Meanwhile, East Khasi Hills District Magistrate, PS Dkhar relaxed the curfew timing in fourteen localities under Lumdiengjri Police Station in Shillong for fifteen hours from June 14. So, curfew would be imposed only from 8 pm to 5 am.

Curfew has also been relaxed for seventeen hours throughout the State Capital. Now there would be night curfew from 10 pm to 5 am throughout the State Capital from June 14.
