Mob kills policeman

BISWANATH CHARIALI, Dec 24 - Sensation prevails at Niralabasti, Baghmari village in Sonitpur district after a policeman was stabbed to death last night by a section of villagers, who also injured several policemen, including the Officer-in-Charge of the Gingia Police Station under the Biswanath Police District.

According to information available, a police team led by the OC, Manoj Baruah, arrived at the village around midnight in connection with a theft case that had taken place at the Power Grid Project site at Baghmari.

As soon as they started their investigation, some villagers raised a hue and cry, saying the police team had come to nab suspected Bangladeshis.

This created panic among the villagers and some of them then attacked the police team with sharp weapons.

In the attack, a police constable, Dwipen Hazarika (45) died on the spot and five others, including Manoj Baruah, Maijing Basumatary, Ranjit Bey, Jagannath Nath and Rahendra Baglari, were seriously injured.

Following this, Biswanath SP Manavendra Devroy, Biswanath SDO (Civil) Pallav Gopal Jha, along with additional police forces and officials rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.

The injured were admitted in the Biswanath Chariali Civil Hospital.

Police have since picked up seven persons in this connection.

Protesting against last night�s gruesome attack, several organisations today blocked the National Highway 15 at Biswanath Chariali police point and demanded action against the guilty.
