MNF wins Mizoram seat

AIZAWL, June 19 - K Vanlalvena of the ruling Mizo National Front was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Mizoram today, defeating Dr Lallianchhunga of the Congress and B Lalchhanzova of the Zoram People�s Movement.

Vanlalvena (50) was declared elected by Returning Officer for the polls and Assembly Secretary and Commissioner H Lalrinawma.

Of the 40 members of the State Assembly, 39 members cast their votes. The lone BJP member, Dr BD Chakma, did not exercise his franchise.

The MNF has 27 MLAs, ZPM seven and Congress five in the 40-member House.

Vanlalvena, a former government high school teacher, was involved with students� organisations as well as church activities. He held the post of president and vice president in the State�s apex student body, Mizo Zirlai Pawl, in the 1990s.

He is currently a member of the national core committee of the MNF.
