MNF to field C Lalrosanga for LS poll

By CORRESPONDENT

AIZAWL, March 13 - The ruling Mizo National Front will field a retired Indian Information Service (IIS) officer as its candidate for the Lok Sabha election to be held in the State on April 11.

Chief Minister and MNF president Zoramthanga today announced the name of C Lalrosanga (62) as the party candidate for the lone Lok Sabha seat of the State, at the party office, Hnam Run, here today.

Zoramthanga also announced that Zothantluanga would be the MNF candidate for the by-election to the Aizawl West-I Assembly constituency, which will be held simultaneously with the Lok Sabha election. By-election to the Assembly seat has been necessitated after Zoram Peoples Movement (ZPM) leader Lalduhoma, who got elected from two seats, vacated it and retained the Serchhip seat.

While Zothantluanga is a senior MNF worker, C Lalrosanga is a new face in politics. A 1982 batch IIS officer, Lalrosanga had held the posts of Deputy Director General and Additional Director General, AIR, and DDK for NE region, and Director, AIR New Delhi and Director, DDK Aizawl. During his service, he had been awarded the INBUSH Award for Excellence in Media by Amity University, New Delhi, and the best actor award by the NEHU.

Meanwhile, Congress and ZPM have forced a secular alliance to take on the communal BJP-led NDA in the Lok Sabha elections. Though it is yet to be made official, the Congress-ZPM alliance is rumoured to field journalist and sports promoter Lalnghinglova Hmar, also known as Tetea Hmar, as its candidate.

With this, the State could witness a five-cornered electoral battle with the MNF, the Congress-ZPM alliance, the BJP, the PRISM and one Independent candidate, Vanlalhriatrenga Chhangte, for the Lok Sabha seat.

The BJP and the Peoples Representation for Identity and Status of Mizoram (PRISM) had already announced that they would go it alone in the polls, while Vanlalhriatrenga Chhangte, who recently opted for voluntary retirement from the Bureau of Mines, Government of India, has already launched a massive campaign along with his supporters.
