AIZAWL, Jan 18 - Mizo National Front (MNF) is set to form a government in the Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) in southern Mizoram as its leader Rashik Mohan Chakma won a floor test today.
In the floor test conducted today under the chairmanship of deputy commissioner of Lawngtlai district at the behest of the Governor, BJP leader Shanti Jiban Chakma, incumbent chief executive member lost the trust vote to RM Chakma, leader of the opposition.
SJ Chakma secured one vote in his favour while 11 MDCs raised hands in favour of RM Chakma.
The Governor, yesterday, issued a notification calling for conduct of floor test of CADC to end the political impasse over claim of majority. The sub-rule (6) of rule 33 of CADC (Constitution, Conduct of Business, etc) Rules 2002 empowers the Governor to summon the CADC at any time if he deems it necessary in the interest of the public.
Earlier, in the recently concluded CADC winter session held on January 14 and 15, the opposition MNF removed the CEM and chairman through a no-confidence motion and subsequently, claimed majority to form the new executive committee of CADC. On the other hand, the parties in the treasury bench cried foul play and demanded the Governors intervention.
In order to ascertain the claim of majority by the two groups, the Governor ordered for the floor test to be conducted by the DC, Lawngtlai for free and fair transaction of business.
After election to the 20-seat Chakma Council in April last year threw up a fractured mandate, BJP and Congress formed a coalition government. The Congress withdrew its support to BJP before the State Assembly elections in November last year.
