By Correspondent

AIZAWL, Oct 10 - The ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) and the Hmar Peoples Convention (HPC) have forged an electoral alliance for the first Sinlung Hills Council elections, slated for November 5.

The MNF will field candidates in seven seats and the HPC will contest five seats in the 12- member council. The MNF will contest at Phuaibuang, Vanbawng, New Vervek, Tinghmun, Ratu, Zohmun and Saipum, while the HPC will contest at Khawlian, Saiphai, Suangpuilawn Sakawrdai South and Sakawrdai North constituencies. The elections will witness a two-cornered fight between the MNF-HPC alliance and the Opposition Congress. The Congress will contest all the seats, except Saipum, whereas the BJP is likely to contest five seats.

Thursday (October 10) was the last date for filing of nomination papers. The last date for withdrawal of candidature is October 14. Scrutiny of the nomination papers will take place on October 11 and the counting of votes will be undertaken on November 5 as soon as all ballot boxes reach the constituency headquarters. Counting of repolled votes, if required, will be held on November 7.

The Sinlung Hills Council was established on July 9 last year as a result of the peace accord signed between the Mizoram Government and the erstwhile Hmar Peoples Convention (Democratic) on April 2 that year. The council will have 12 elected members and two nominated members.

A total of 20,914 voters, including 10,405 women, will exercise their franchise in 38 polling stations.
