MNF gears up for Sinlung Hills Council polls

By Correspondent

AIZAWL, Oct 27 - MNF president and Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga has promised to bring a new dawn to the Hmar-inhabited areas of northeastern Mizoram as he kicked off the campaign for the first election to Sinlung Hills Council (SHC) at Sakawrdai town.

We will develop this area so that it will no longer be called as Hmar thimpui (underdeveloped area), said Zoramthanga while addressing a huge gathering recently.

The first election to the 12-member SHC, established following a peace agreement signed between Mizoram Government and the then militant outfit Hmar Peoples Convention (Democratic) in 2018, is scheduled to be held on November 5.

The MNF has forged an alliance with the HPC(D) by conceding five seats to the latter.

Zoramthanga assured that his government would fully implement the agreement signed with the HPC(D).

He said their main opponent, the Congress, has passed its prime and does not pose any threat.

Altogether 43 candidates are in the fray for the council polls, which is likely to witness a straight contest between the MNF-HPC combine and the Congress.

Zoram Peoples Movement, has decided not to contest the elections.
