MLAs widow, 3 others in fray in Arunachal

By CORRESPONDENT

ITANAGAR, Sept 30 - Four candidates, including Chakat Aboh, wife of slain National Peoples Party MLA Tirong Aboh, have filed nominations for the ensuing bye-election to the Khonsa West Assembly seat in Tirap district of Arunachal Pradesh.

Altogether, four candidates have filed their nominations for the bypolls to Khonsa West on the last day of filing papers on Monday, DJ Bhattacharjee, Chief Electoral Officer (in-charge) of Arunachal Pradesh, told reporters here on Monday.

The other three candidates are Yumsem Matey, Wangchu Lowang and Azet Homtok, he said, adding that all four are Independent candidates. Scrutiny of nominations will be taken up at 11 am on Tuesday.

Asked about security arrangements for the bye-election, Bhattacharjee said six companies of central forces were demanded for peaceful conduct of the bypolls slated for October 21. So far, two companies have been allotted.

It may be mentioned here that at an all-party meeting convened by Chief Minister and BJP leader Pema Khandu on September 28, representatives of various political parties, including the ruling BJP, opposition Congress, NPP, Janata Dal (United) and Peoples Party of Arunachal, picked Chakat Aboh as a consensus candidate and decided not to field any candidate from their parties against her. The decision to support late Abohs widow was taken to express their solidarity with the bereaved family.

MLA Tirong Aboh, along with 10 others, was killed by suspected NSCN militants in an ambush on May 21, two days ahead of the Assembly poll results. The bye-election to Khonsa West was necessitated after the death of Aboh, who had contested the April 11 polls as an NPP nominee.
