MLAs comment on HS Brahma draws flak

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, Sept 21 - The Guwahati Senior Citizens Association (GSCA), Journalists Association of Assam (JAA) and Assam Journalist and Literary Pensioners Association have condemned the statement of MLA Sherman Ali, describing Hari Shankar Brahma, retired Chief Election Commissioner, as a mad man and abusing the report of the committee headed by Brahma on the extent and dimension of the problem of Bangladeshi infiltration in Assam as trash.

Senior journalist DN Chakravartty, in a statement on behalf of the organisations, said that it was unfortunate that Ali, by taking advantage of the legislative privilege of a public representative, had seriously abused the status and insulted not only Brahma personally but the institution as well as the Assamese community at large.

Chakravartty said that it was unthinkable in a civilised society of a public representative degrading himself to such an abysmal position.

He added that Constitutional and legal experts would take up the issue and drag such an irresponsible public representative to the court of law.
