MLAs, ADC members threaten to resign in Manipur

IMPHAL, Aug 13 � All three MLAs and nine members of the autonomous district council from Sadar Hills have threatened to resign if their demand of converting the Hills area into a full-fledged revenue district, is not met.

ADC chairman S H Seihpu, who met Governor Gurbachan Jagat along with some ADC members, told mediapersons today that they would go to Delhi tomorrow to meet Central leaders including the Prime Minister to apprise them of the situation and decide their future course of action after their return.

The Sadar Hills District Demand Committee (SHDDC), has demanded conversion of Sadar Hills area in Manipur�s Senapati district into a full-fledged revenue district.

He said the Governor had assured him that he would meet Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh, in the next few days to discuss the matter.

Speaking at a public function yesterday, Chief Minister Ibobi Singh had said that the issue was a serious one and no hasty decision could be taken since the area was home to various ethnic communities and appealed to MLAs and ADC members not to resign.

Meanwhile, the Jiribam District Demand Committee, demanding conversion of Jiribam subdivision in Imphal East district into a full fledged revenue district, has agreed to suspend their proposed economic blockade on National Highway 53 (Imphal-Jiribam-Silchar) from tomorrow.

They would hold talks with the government on August 24 on the issue.

Meanwhile, a driver identified as Md Rehman who was seriously injured by supporters of SHDDC while transporting essential items on the national highway on August 3, today died at the Shija hospital here, hospital sources said.

Manipur Transport Minister L Jayentakumar who visited the hospital to console the family members condemned the violence indulged in by supporters of the economic blockade.

He said the government would give ex-gratia payment to the next of kin of the driver after examining the issue. � PTI
