Mizoram villagers release rescued python into forest

By Correspondent

AIZAWL, May 29 - The villagers of Kanghmun have set an example in wildlife protection by rescuing a python and releasing it in the wild.

The 14-foot-long python, spotted near the village on May 28, was rescued by a group of people returning home with firewood from the nearby forests. When they brought it to the village, the Village Council and the local Young Mizo Association (YMA) decided that it should be freed into the wild.

The video that went viral today, showed the release ceremony of the python. The event turned into an impromptu celebration with local YMA president K Lalhmingthanga and Village Council president Zirliana urging the people to ensure the protection of all animals.

In the video clip, the local YMA president is heard egging the python on to go into the forest. Go, Saphai (Mizo name for python), go wherever you will, stay safe, he said as he released it into the forest away from the village.

Pythons are peaceful and mild, and do not usually harm people, Lalhmingthanga said.
