Mizoram seeks Central forces to escort vehicles

By SPL Correspondent/correspondent

NEW DELHI/AIZAWL, Nov 6 - The Mizoram Government has urged the Union Home Ministry to deploy Central forces to escort stranded vehicles on the highway along the border with Assam.

In a formal communication to the Joint Secretary (North East), the Mizoram Home Secretary on Thursday forwarded a joint resolution passed by the Silchar Truck Drivers Association and the Zoram Drivers Union in this regard.

In their joint appeal, the truckers bodies requested the respective State governments of Mizoram and Assam to make arrangements to escort stranded vehicles by Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) personnel so that vehicles can reach their destinations safely.

The Mizoram Home Secretary stated that her Government would deploy CRPF personnel to escort stranded vehicles from Mizoram up to the inter-State border provided a reciprocal measure was taken by the Assam Government to escort all the stranded vehicles from Assam to Mizoram, including those at the Mizoram House compound in Silchar, up to the border.

Meanwhile, both the States have already decided to seek forces from the Centre to defuse the tension on the border.

As reported, a meeting was held in Silchar on Wednesday between the deputy commissioners of Assams Cachar, Hailakandi and Karimganj districts with their counterparts of Kolasib, Mamit and Aizawl districts of Mizoram.

The meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Jishnu Baruah and attended by senior Assam Police and Forest officials, after exploring various options to resolve the impasse, decided to seek the Centres assistance to defuse the border dispute.
