AIZAWL, Dec 24 - Mizoram Sainik School (MSS), the 27th and latest Sainik School in India, has started to admit girls from the academic session 2018-19.
MSS, located at Chhingchhip in Serchhip district, will be the first Sainik School to admit girl cadets.
Mizoram Governor Lt Gen Nirbhay Sharma (Retd) expressed his delight over Central Governments decision to allow admission of girl students starting next academic session. Being an ardent advocate of this move, the Governor said that this shows that there is equal opportunity for development in Mizoram and the State leads the nation in gender equality and empowerment of women.
The news is a wonderful gift to the people of Mizoram on the joyous occasion of Christmas, he added.
The School has already invited applications for admission into 6th standard for girl cadets. An entrance examination will be held on January 8, 2018, while applications can be submitted till December 30. Girls born between 2-7-2006 and 1-7-2008 (both days inclusive) will be eligible for this examination.
Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla, who inaugurated the MSS in May this year, said initiative had been taken for establishment of the Sainik School in 1998. However, unfortunately the project was abandoned for ten years (during the rule of Mizo National Front).
He added that the present State Government has revived the project as soon as they came back to power in 2008.
Thanhawla thanked the 60 landowners in Chhingchhip who donated their land for the School without expecting anything in return. It is a wise move as the village would be the one that would benefit the most from the school.
