AIZAWL, Aug 2 - Mizoram recorded the highest single-day spike of 55 COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours.

Of 194 samples tested at the Zoram Medical College laboratory, 54 turned out to be positive, and one out of 28 samples examined at the TrueNat laboratory in Lunglei district tested positive on Saturday, an official statement said.

Among the fresh cases, 47 are BSF, CRPF and Assam Rifles personnel who came to the State from different parts of the country.

Except two with symptoms who had been admitted to the Zoram Medical College, the rest were asymptomatic and under facility quarantine. The eight civilians who were tested positive included two staff of The Grand Hotel at Chanmari locality which is being used as a paid quarantine facility.

The two staff, who reportedly contracted the virus from a quarantinee at the hotel, had gone out of the hotel to buy vegetables and other items from a local market on Saturday, which created panic among the people of the locality.

Government sources said contact tracing has been done.

Mizoram so far reported 468 cases of COVID-19 of which 215 are active. With 253 recovered cases, Mizoram has achieved a recovery rate of 54.05 percent.
