Mizoram party opposes Bill to amend forest Act

By Correspondent

AIZAWL, Aug 3 - The PRISM (Peoples Representatives for Identity and Status of Mizoram) party today criticised the Mizoram Governments alleged apathy towards the proposed amendment to the Indian Forest Act, 1927, and demanded immediate action in this regard.

The PRISM alleged that the State Government has not done anything even after a month the draft Bill was sent to it for consultations.

The Mizoram Government appears to be not concerned a bit by such a draconian Bill, the PRISM said in a statement today.

According to the PRISM, the draft amendment Bill could be more dreadful than the dreaded Armed Forces Special Powers Act under which security personnel arrested and killed innocent people under mere suspicions during the period of insurgency in the State.

If the amendment Bill is passed in the Parliament, the lives of the people, especially forest dwellers, whose livelihood largely depends on forests, will be miserable, the PRISM said.

Accusing the Mizoram Government of refusing to make the draft Bill known to the public, the party demanded that action should be taken fast before it was too late.
