AIZAWL, June 22 The International Yoga Day was observed in some districts of Mizoram today as the government did not arrange any programme yesterday, as it fell on Sunday.
The State AYUSH department organised functions across the state where speakers said that the benefits of practising yoga included mental peace, fitness, health, improved physiological functioning of the body and spiritual evolution.
A number of youths also participated in yoga organised by the state Nehru Yuva Kendra.
The powerful churches and the ruling Congress had objected to the celebration of International Yoga Day on Sunday.
The Mizoram Kohhran Hruaitute Committee, a conglomerate of leaders of 14 major churches, had asked its members not to participate in the celebrations and urged the government to conduct a thorough study before introducing yoga in educational institutions. PTI
