Mizoram observes International Yoga Day

AIZAWL, June 21 - Along with rest of the world, Mizoram, for the first time today, observed the International Yoga Day in Aizawl, signaling the formal beginning of yoga in the State.

The main event of the International Yoga Day in Mizoram was held at the Assam Rifles Ground here with Governor Lt Gen Nirbhay Sharma (Retd) as the chief guest.

The event at the 39 AR Ground, organised jointly by the Assam Riffles and 39 Bn Assam Riffles has seen participation of the Governor and a strong crowd of over 1,000 yoga enthusiasts despite early morning showers.

In his inaugural address, the Governor, keen to demystify the allegation that yoga being unsafe exercise to followers of some religious faiths, said that the sole purpose of yoga is no more than imparting health to people in general.

A beneficiary of several years of practice in yoga, the Governor expressed hopes that more people of the State will to come forward and jump on the bandwagon of yoga practitioners from more than 200 countries who are reaping the benefits of yoga.

�Yoga is an invaluable gift of the ancient Indian tradition to the world,� he added.

He said that yoga is a healthy practice and is nothing to be scared of due to alleged religious connection as about 200 countries around the world are practising it.
