Mizoram observes advent of Rev William Williams

By The Assam Tribune

AIZAWL, March 15 - The Presbyterian Church of Indias Mizoram Synod today observed the advent of Reverend William Williams, the first Christian missionary to set foot on Mizoram soil in 1891, then known as Lushai country.

A special prayer and worship service would be held tonight in all the local churches.

Williams learned about the existence of Mizo tribe from a Mizo chief imprisoned in Syhlet and landed at Kutbulkai near Mualvum village in Mizoram-Assam borders Kolasib district.

He started sailing on the river Tlawng from Silchar in Assam on March 15, 1891 and reached Aizawl (then Aijal) on March 20. Reverend William Williams preached the Gospel of Christ to the primitive Mizos and distributed Gospel tracts in some villages. PTI
