Mizoram MPs asked to protest sexual abuse

By Newmai News

AIZAWL, Dec 19 Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), Mizorams most influential students body, has urged Mizo MPs CL Ruala and Lalhmingliana to raise their voice against the rape, molestation and racism suffered by many students and employees from the Northeastern States in New Delhi on the floor of the Parliament.

The student body also asked Mizoram Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla to take steps for the safety of Northeast students in New Delhi.

In a press release, the MZP stated that thousands of students from the Northeast go to other parts of the country, especially New Delhi, for better education. But it is painful to learn that many of them are facing discrimination and harassment at the hands of the people there, the release rued.

The Mizo students body also said that educated girls from Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, who are working in call centres and IT sectors in metros, are facing racial discrimination and sexual assault. They live in small groups, and are often alone, becoming soft targets for harassment in their residences and workplaces, the student body added.

Seeking urgent attention towards the recent abduction and gang rape of a 30-year-old BPO employee from Mizoram on November 23, the students body urged the two Mizo MPs to take the issue seriously and do whatever is possible on their part.
