Mizoram local polls on Aug 27

AIZAWL, Aug 5 - Amid the coronavirus pandemic, Mizoram will go to polls to elect representatives to the local councils under the Aizawl Municipal Corporation and village councils (equivalent to Panchayati Raj institutions) on August 27, the State Election Commission (SEC) announced today.

With the polling date announced, the model code of conduct came into effect from today, the SEC said.

Counting will take place after 5 pm after the polling is over. If repoll is necessary, it will be held on August 28.

There are 4,54,180 voters for the village councils, including 2,29,937 female voters. As many as 2,464 seats are available in the village councils, of which 633 are reserved for women.

There are 2,18,758 voters for the local councils in Aizawl, of whom 1,17,037 are women. The local councils have 545 seats, including 148 reserved for women.

�As the COVID-19 pandemic situation in Mizoram appears to be fading with no reported community spread, we hope that the atmosphere would turn conducive for conducting the elections. Therefore, we are preparing for the same,� State Election Commissioner Laima Chozah said.
