AIZAWL, Oct 8 - Government of Mizoram would implement Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC), a self-financing social security and health insurance scheme for workers from December this year, Union Minister for Labour and Employment (Independent charge) Bandaru Dattatreya told media here on Wednesday.

Dattatreya, who is on his maiden visit to Mizoram, said primary purpose of his visit is to discuss with the State Government officials about the pending issues and working condition of workers under the ESIC scheme. He said that the Central Government has given priority to the NE region for implementation of the scheme.

The ESIC scheme, according to the Union Minister, will cover four States in the Northeastern region including Mizoram to generate more employment opportunities, adding that the scheme also aims at promoting skill development and entrepreneurship.

The Union Minister who arrived in Aizawl yesterday told the media that the ESIC would be implemented in Mizoram from December this year under which 10 bedded dispensaries and 30 bedded hospitals shall be set up.

He said the Centre has placed 20 reserved seats in medical college under the ESIC scheme. ESIC is an autonomous corporation under Ministry of Labour and Employment to provide socio-economic protection to workers and their dependants covered under the scheme.

During the visit, the Union Minister met Governor Lt Gen Nirbhay Sharma (Retd) at Raj Bhavan. He also met Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla the same evening. He is scheduled to leave for Imphal today.
