Mizoram Govt officials held on burglary charges

AIZAWL, Aug 29 - Five government officials, including two women, were arrested in Mamit district of Mizoram for their alleged involvement in the burglary of their office on August 23 night, a senior police officer said today.

Superintendent of Police HL Thangzuala said over phone that five officials of the Election Office of Mamit district were arrested for their alleged involvement in the burglary on August 23 night when all the forms duly filled in by Bru people in six Tripura relief camps were found missing.

The SP said the police were interrogating the five officials at the Mamit Police Station. The burglary apparently took place on August 23 night and the district administration submitted an FIR on the next night, he said.

Investigation was launched and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by the Sub-Divisional Police Officer of Mamit was constituted in view of the sensitivity of the case, they said.

Election officials who conducted revision of the voters lists in the relief camps in North Tripura district returned on August 19 and began working on the genuineness of the claims by Brus lodged in the relief camps.

The unfinished electoral roll papers were left in the district election office on the night of August 23 and were found missing the next day. � PTI
