Mizoram gets its first engineering college

AIZAWL, Feb 4 - Mizoram�s first engineering college � Mizoram Engineering College (MEC) at Pukpui village in southern Lunglei district � was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi through video conferencing from Srinagar on Sunday.

Mizoram Engineering College is one of the 11 professional colleges and 136 projects being funded under the Rashtriya Uchchattar Shiksha Abhiyan scheme that were inaugurated nationwide. Construction of the college started in June 2016 and was completed in November 2018.

The launch was witnessed by many officials of the Mizoram government, including Higher and Technical Education Secretary Biaktluanga and Mizoram University Vice Chancellor KRS Sambavisa Rao at the Chief Secretary�s Conference Hall.

While the college is still in its initial stage, the first department to start functioning will be the Civil Engineering department in temporary mode for the 2019-2020 academic session.

The college occupies a total area of 24.9 acres, and was built with a budget of Rs 26 crore. The buildings include an academic block, laboratory, workshop, library, cafeteria, students� common room and hostels for boys and girls. The college has an enrolling capacity of up to 300 students. The college will have three departments � civil engineering, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering.

The State government will construct a 3-km approach road, set up water connection and water storage facilities, and provide a transformer and electricity connection, which is expected to cost around Rs 9 crore.
