Mizoram eyes bamboo to boost economy

AIZAWL, Oct 2 - The Mizoram Government has allocated Rs 1.31 crore for development of bamboo in the State.

The State has also received an outlay of Rs 3.5 crore under the National Bamboo Mission (NBM)-Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) during the fiscal 2019-20.

It was stated by Mizoram Home Minister Lalchamliana during a bamboo plantation programme organised by the Assam Rifles at Lammual (Assam Rifles Ground) here on Thursday on the eve of Gandhi Jayanti.

Lalchamliana also said that the North Eastern Council (NEC) has allocated Rs 13 crore for development of bamboo in Mizoram during the financial year 2020-21. The minister, however, added that the sanction order is awaited.

The Mizoram Home Minister further said that 213 beneficiaries have been identified for taking up bamboo plantation. They have been provided nearly one lakh secondary hardened tissue culture bamboo plants under the scheme.

Lalchamliana expressed confidence that the State Government would be able to improve the economy of the State from bamboo.
