Mizoram CM visits alma mater in Imphal

IMPHAL, Feb 13 - Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga visited his alma mater, DM College, here today and spent more than an hour, reminiscing his college days in the early 1960s with the teachers there.

�We had a very surprise visitor in the Mizoram Chief Minister who has fond memories of his college days, this morning. He visited his old classrooms and also the old boys� hostel where he had stayed for five years,� said Dr Chungkham Sheelaramani, principal of DM College of Arts.

Zoramthanga recalled that he had participated in a debate competition in the college during his speech made following a request, Dr Sheelaramani said, adding that the Mizoram Chief Minister came to study in the DM College as he was from a poor family and his daily expenditure (including meals) was only one rupee.

The Mizoram Chief Minister also recollected his days in ultra camps during the interaction and firmly stated that there cannot be any development till there is peace.

Zoramthanga completed his pre-university and BA (English honours) courses in the then DM College during 1962-1966. The institution had functioned as the DM College of Science, of Arts and of Commerce before it was converted into a university. The Mizoram Chief Minister handed over photocopies of his provisional certificate and marksheets to the DM University authorities for records.

Chief Minister Zoramthanga had been in Manipur since February 11 to attend the Zo Kutpui festival in the Churachandpur district headquarters. The two-day festival which concluded on February 12 at Kawnpui village, was jointly organised by the Zo Kutpui organising committee, the Manipur Tourism Department and the Government of Mizoram. Before his departure, Zoramthanga also called on his Manipur counterpart, N Biren Singh, at the latter�s official residence in Imphal.
