Mizoram CM accepts Ministers resignation

By Correspondent

AIZAWL, Aug 23 - Mizoram Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla today denied that his Government discriminated the Chakma community in the State, even though he has accepted the resignation of Minister BD Chakma.

Lal Thanhawla said he had sent Dr BD Chakmas resignation to the Governoron Tuesdayafternoon, after consulting the Congress Legislature Party members at his office. However, the Governor is yet to give his formal consent.

The CM said accepting Chakmas resignation did not mean that he admitted discrimination against the Chakma community which was cited by Chakma as the reason behind his resignation.

As a Government, we donot have any discrimination against Chakmas who are bona fide citizens of Mizoram. We give equal treatment to all citizens, irrespective of caste and religion, he said.

If some (Mizo) organisations discriminate Chakma community, I am not aware of that. My Government gives equal treatment to Mizos and Chakmas. However, we must discriminate illegal Chakmas who try to grab the rights of the citizens, he said.

Chakma had resigned due to discrimination against Chakma community after four Chakma students were denied admission to medical colleges despite the fact that they were selected through NEET.

Lal Thanhawla also said that he was not considering a reshuffle of his Ministry even though two posts of Ministers were lying vacant. His Cabinet colleague Lalrinmawia Ralte had earlier resigned on the issue of sending 32 Mizoram students to alleged fake institution in Kolkata and alleged misappropriation of public money in this connection.
