AIZAWL, July 11 - Dealers of cement and iron rod in Mizoram on Wednesday observed a one-day strike by downing shutters to protest hike in cement prices by three companies Dalmia, Star and Topcem.

The strike called by All Mizoram Cement and Iron Rod Dealers Association (AMCIRDA) was observed in all parts of the State, the Association secretary Henry Lalbiakzinga said. He also said that about 130 cement and iron rod shops in Aizawl and several others across the State observed the shutter down strike.

Lalbiakzinga stated that they will approach Mizo Students Union (MSU) to intervene in the issue. He said that the three cement companies have recently hiked the prices of cement in Mizoram from Rs 470 to Rs 490 per bag, which has greatly affected consumers.

He said, they have appealed to the three companies to reduce the existing price, but to no avail. He also said that they have also appealed to Mizoram Government to intervene in the matter.

According to AMCIRDA president Sangdingliana, while one cement bag is available at Rs 401 (Dalmia) in Silchar in neighbouring Assam, it is sold at Rs 490 in Aizawl.
