Mizoram celebrates arrival of Welsh Missionary

AIZAWL, Sept 1 � Presbyterian Church of India Mizoram Synod, the largest church in the State yesterday observed �Ramthar Ni� or the day of enlightenment to commemorate the arrival of Welsh Christian Missionary Rev David Evan Jones.

Special prayer and worship services were held to commemorate the day in all the local churches with pastors and church elders delivering sermons on the need to spread the Gospel throughout the globe.

Jones, who was sent by the Welsh Presbyterian Church to establish the Presbyterian Church in Mizoram, then known to the Bristish Colonial rulers as the Lushai country.

He arrived in the Lushai country on August 31, 1897, seven years after the first Christian missionary Rev William Williams set foot in this inaccessible area.

The Presbyterian Church has been observing the arrival of Jones as �Ramthar Ni� since 1973. � PTI
