Mizo NGOs call off boycott of PM visit

By Correspondent

AIZAWL, Dec 15 - A conglomeration of major NGOs in Mizoram today withdrew its earlier decision to boycott Prime Minister Narendra Modis visit to the State capital here on Saturday.

On Thursday, the NGOs coordination committee, comprising Young Mizo Association, Mizoram Upa Pawl (elder citizens association), Mizo Hmeichhe Insuihkhawm Pawl (MHIP) (womens organisation), and two major student organisations Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP) and Mizo Students Union (MSU), issued a statement saying that they would boycott the PMs visit on December 16 and urged the people not to attend his public meeting at Assam Rifles ground.

The NGOs were disappointed that PM, in his maiden visit to the State, was scheduled to spend only a few hours to address the public, leaving no time for NGOs to interact with hims. They felt that the brief visit was an insult to the people of Mizoram as there would be no time for the representatives of the people to meet the PM.

A statement of the NGOs coordination committee said today that they agreed to call off the boycott after the officials assured them that the PM would spare time to meet them.

The NGOs in a fresh statement, urged all the people to warmly welcome the Prime Minister and attend the public meeting.

Officials said security has been beefed up and the State is set for the Prime Ministers maiden visit.

According to the tentative programme, Modi will land at Lengpui Airport on Saturday from where he will be flown by helicopter to Thuampui Helipad on the eastern outskirts of the city. From there, he will proceed to Assam Rifles ground. He will address the public and inaugurate the 60 MW Tuirial hydel project.
