TURA, Nov 9 - There were mixed responses in Tura towards the sudden demonetisation of high value currencies of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 with most feeling an immediate pinch due to lack of currency to carry on normal daily transactions. Shopkeepers refused to take currency that has been demonetised.

For petrol pumps, however, it was brisk business as high value currency notes were still being accepted.

The move is great to control the flow of black money, however, the decision coming in such a short notice has rendered most of the money we had in hand useless. There should have been more time given to us to make our arrangements, said activist, SR Sangma. This is a body blow to insurgency. All their ill-gotten wealth is now suddenly worthless. The decision is also expected to affect politicians as well as the upcoming polls in 2018.

Politicians who stashed huge sums will now suddenly find themselves in a state of despair. This is great for a free electoral process, said another resident.

The motive was to ensure that people hoarding money could be accounted for as well as to control fake currency. This move of the PM will ensure a better and more streamlined economy, said BJP spokesperson Biplab Bose.
