Mission to cut emissions: PM

By The Assam Tribune

New Delhi, Feb 5 India will spare no efforts to contribute to the success of post-Copenhagen process, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh declared today as he announced the launch of a National Mission on Enhanced Energy Efficiency aimed at cutting carbon emissions by 99 million tonnes, reports PTI.

Inaugurating an international summit on climate change here, Singh said India has already committed itself to a path of sustainable development based on a graduated shift to the extent possible from the use of fossil fuels to renewable and clean energy, including nuclear energy.

Within the ambit of our National Action Plan on Climate Change, India has already unveiled one of the worlds most ambitious plans for promoting solar energy, targeting an installed capacity of 20,000 MW by the year 2022, he told the meet being attended by Presidents, Prime Ministers and Energy Ministers of several countries.

I wish to assure this distinguished gathering that India will spare no effort in contributing to the success of the post-Copenhagen process, he said at the 10th Delhi Sustainable Development Summit.

We will soon launch an ambitious National Mission on Enhanced Energy Efficiency that will put in place an innovative policy and regulatory regime to unlock the market for energy efficiency, estimated at over 15 billion dollar, Singh said.

He said the initiative is expected to lead to avoidance of capacity addition of nearly 20,000 MW and reduce carbon dioxide emissions of almost 99 million tonnes.

While identifying prices of pulses, sugar, potato and onion as major areas of concern, the CCP on January 21 made an ad hoc allocation of 10 kg of foodgrains to all ration card holders per month over and above the existing quota.

The CPP also suggested that state governments should play a more active role in containing prices through effective dehoarding operations and use official agencies like the State Civil Supplies Corporations to distribute articles directly to consumers.

Earlier in the day, the CWC under the chairmanship of party President Sonia Gandhi, took stock of the price situation and is believed to have asked the government to take steps to contain inflation.

Among others, the CWC meeting was attended by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Defence Minister A K Antony, Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and party general secretaries.

Price rise in recent months has led to a veiled attack on Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar with Congress leaders saying that not enough was being done on this front by the NCP leader.

The Congress President in a letter to party workers recently had said the issue of price rise was one of the highest concerns and she had taken up the issue with the Prime Minister.
