PASIGHAT, April 5 - The political rivalry among parties and candidates took an ugly turn in Likabali Assembly constituency in Lower Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh, as unidentified miscreants today set fire to a BJP pandal constructed for a poll rally.
The BJP rally due on Saturday was scheduled to be attended by Union Minister Kiren Rijiju and Chief Minister Pema Khandu.
Police said miscreants set fire to the pandal at around 4 am today. Fire tenders rushed to the spot and doused the fire within a few minutes, but the blaze had burnt down a large portion of the pandal.
Reacting to the incident, BJP leaders of Likabali said political opponents of the ruling party were involved in the unethical work fearing the growing popularity of the BJPs Assembly candidate Tapak Lendo.
Some political opponents are worried about the BJPs winning prospects and they are getting involved in such immoral activities to demoralise our party workers, said Lower Siang district BJP in-charge Techi Nesha.
District BJP spokesperson Mikjom Taso, Majuk Taba and others also condemned the incident. Senior police officials and the district magistrate visited the spot to take stock of the damage. An FIR was lodged by the BJP at the Likabali PS. Police also interrogated a few persons.
The complaint does not name any suspect. We are conducting an investigation and interrogating some suspects to trace clues behind the incident, said officer-in-charge of Likabali PS, Inspector Tumke Ansu.
