Mirza Chowk named after Mamoni Raisom

MIRZA, June 5 - Mirza Chowk, the gateway to South Kamrup district and a business and education hub, was renamed Dr Mamoni Raisom Goswami Chowk in a meeting held here on Saturday.

It may be mentioned here that Jnanpeeth awardee Dr Goswami�s paternal native place is located at Khatiamari, 5 from here. Dr Goswami spent her childhood at Khatiamari. Though she was the pride of the people of South Kamrup, no significant intervention was made to perpetuate her memory. Only a small hospital was named after her at Borihat.

Soon after assuming office, the Circle Officer of Palasbari, Pankaj Chakraborty formulated a plan to rename the Mirza Chowk after Dr Goswami to keep her memory alive.

Attending the function held to rename the Mirza Chowk, the MLA of Palasbari, Pranab Kalita expressed his pleasure over the development.

Kalita announced that several ambitious projects would be launched soon for the all-round development and beautification of Palasbari LAC.

The MLA further expressed concern over the business of illicit liquor and gambling going on in several parts of Palasbari. He vowed to close down this illicit trade. He sought the cooperation of all sections of the society in this regard.

Kalita also warned of strong action against the bootleggers and gamblers. He further said that a large number of industrial units have been coming up at Palasbari LAC, which would help develop the economy of the constituency. He gave an assurance that the young and educated unemployed youths of Palasbari LAC would be given preference during the appointment process in these industrial units.

Speaking on the occasion, the Palasbari Revenue Circle Officer said that Mirza Chowk would be beautified and developed. He added that in memory of Dr Mamoni Raisom Goswami, her statue would also be erected at Mirza Chowk .

South Kamrup Deputy Commissioner Rajib Prakash Baruah and South Kamrup SP also spoke in the meeting and asked the people to help the district administration in curbing social evils like illicit liquor consumption and gambling. The meeting was also attended by Satyabrat Goswami, a relative of Dr Mamoni Goswami, and the principal of DK College, Dr Ramesh Kalita.
