HAFLONG, May 28 - Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal vide a letter on May 22 addressed to 12-year-old Aniketa Das of Class-VI of Umrangso PHE Colony thanked her for her concern for the environment.
It may be mentioned that Aniketa Das from Umrangso town, 120 kilometres from Haflong in Dima Hasao had written a letter to the Chief Minister requesting him to adopt �Zero Waste Initiative�.
Aniketa mentioned in her letter thus: �Recently, zero waste initiative was adopted by our colony. Since then, there has been a drastic change in the waste management system by the residents of the colony. A positive outcome has therefore been witnessed within the colony.
But when we consider other parts of the town from the cleanliness point of view, it is invariably in a pathetic condition.
Moreover, as plastic waste has registered an all-time high, I, therefore, urge you to make zero waste approach compulsory, which would help to make our present as well as our future safe.�
In her letter she also dropped a few other suggestions to the Chief Minister, which she felt could ensure zero waste, i.e., full stop to waste burning, segregation of domestic waste and disposing of biodegradable waste in an earthen pit and non-biodegradable waste in municipal dustbins.
After receiving the letter, the Chief Minister had sent an appreciation letter to encourage her. In the letter, the CM praised her concern for the environment even at such a tender age.
The Chief Minister also appreciated her bid to generate awareness among the people on the urgent need for proper waste management.
A student of Sacred Heart High School at Umrangso, Aniketa Das is the daughter of Tapan Das, a Grade-IV employee of PHE, Umrangso. She lives with her family at the official quarter in PHE Colony at Umrangso.
