TURA, Dec 30 - An 11-year-old girl from Chidimbu village under Dainadubi outpost in North Garo Hills district of Meghalaya was raped on multiple occasions by her stepfather who would, on the pretext of assisting her, sexually assault the young girl whenever he could.
The rape was discovered by the mother of the victim who upon questioning the girl learnt of the truth and informed police on the matter leading to the arrest of the stepfather on Friday. An FIR in the incident was filed at Mendipathar Police Station.
According to police, the victim is the stepdaughter of the accused, identified as 27 year-old Sunil D Shira, who married her mother after the death of her husband.
�He would take her everywhere, to the fields, on fishing trips and whichever place he could on the pretext of teaching her things. Though the mother suspected something was wrong, she was not able to catch him redhanded. However, two days back he took her on a fishing trip and came back after several hours. Sensing something was amiss, the mother questioned the daughter yesterday but she did not reveal anything,� said police.
The victim was questioned once again by her mother and after sustained pressure revealed the details of what happened during the various trips. She immediately informed the elders in the village as well as the authorities.
�Immediately after we learnt of the incident, the accused was arrested. The victim was medically examined yesterday while the accused stepfather has been forwarded to custody in Tura,� said DSP Nikcheng Momin. The stepfather has been booked under POCSO.
�We are shocked to learn of the incident and demand the harshest punishment to the perpetrator of the crime,� said coordinator of AIJIF, Chenang Momin.
