Minor girl married against will, rescued

RAHA, March 18 - A minor girl, living under miserable conditions at her husband�s house, was rescued by members of the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Nagaon with support from police and the Child Line on Monday.

According to information received from Monalisa Das, secretary, DLSA, Nagaon, the minor girl living with her parents at Kampur was forcefully married to one Bapon Das of Chakitup area of the district against her will by her mother Animai Baishya a few days ago. The girl was not happy with the marriage and she tried to set herself ablaze several times after the marriage. The groom�s family also demanded an amount of Rs 2 lakh from Jawaharlal Baishya, father of the girl, on condition of giving him his daughter back.

Acting on a tip-off the DLSA, Nagaon team comprising Monalissa Das, Rupali Goswami, panel advocate, Nagaon Bar Association, representatives of the District Child Protection Office namely Pallav Saiki, Childline and a team of police rescued the minor girl.

After being rescued, the girl was handed over to Childline after a medical test was conducted on her at BP Civil Hospital here. The concerned police station was intimated to take necessary action accordingly against Animai Baishya, Bapon Das and his family members by the DLSA, Nagaon.

The local people and organisations appreciated the initiative of DLSA in rescuing the ill-fated girl and rendering prompt legal aid to her.
