Minister visits SAG venues

SHILLONG, Dec 22 - Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Zenith Sangma today inspected the venues of the 12th South Asian Games here.

Some of the venues of the games include NEIGRIHMS Sports Hall, SAI Centre, NEHU Campus and Jawaharlal Nehru Complex, Polo ground.

After the inspection Sangma said all preparation for the games are making good progress. �We are targeting January 15 for completion of the preparations from our end so that the event gets going smoothly,� Sangma said.

Meghalaya is jointly hosting the 12th South Asian Games with Assam. A total of 23 disciplines would be hosted in Meghalaya and Assam from February 5 to 16 next year.

Out of the total 23 disciplines, 16 disciplines would be held in Guwahati, Assam while Meghalaya will host seven disciplines which includes Badminton, Table-Tennis, Judo, Archery, Women�s Football, Boxing, Taekwando and Wushu in Shillong.

Meanwhile, Sangma said, Rs 4.91 crore has been sanctioned to Meghalaya for the games, but, much of the amount is yet to be received by the State Government. �We have received around Rs 2.16 crore, out of the total,� he added.

On the other hand the state police has sought about Rs 7 crore to ensure adequate security cover for the event.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Games, RK Sharma said, that the government of Meghalaya and Games Secretariat have assured full proof security for the mega event. Sharma said that extra precautions are being taken as many of the guests are coming from abroad.
