Minister clears air over Trust site

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Aug 9 - Revenue Minister Pallab Lochan Das today informed the State Assembly that land allotted to Bhupen Hazarika Cultural Trust in the year 2000 for preserving the works of the Sudhakantha has come under the ambit of Guwahati Water Bodies (Preservation and Conservation) Act 2008 and no construction work can be taken over that plot of land now.

Replying to a query by BJP MLA Padma Hazarika, the Minister stated that the plot was allotted to the trust by the State government in Hengerabari, but no construction work was ever done on the land.

Meanwhile, the Guwahati Water Bodies (Preservation and Conservation) Act came into being in 2008 and the said plot was identified among the protected areas, restricting the use of the land. The law has to be amended to grant construction permission to the trust, he stated.

He however, added that since the matter involved preserving the memories of the legendary Dr Bhupen Hazarika, the State government was ready to extend all possible help. If the trust identifies another plot of land, and approaches the State government, we can take initiative, he added.
