Minister assures development of border areas

By Correspondent

JORHAT, May 7 Taking stock of the current situation at Rongham and its nearby areas along the Assam-Nagaland border in Jorhat district, Assam Minister of Border Areas Girindra Mallik on Wednesday assured that development activities would be taken up in the remote and backward border areas of the district, which have poor connectivity.

On the ministers visit to the area, local residents of Rongkham requested him to implement government schemes for border area development, construct roads and install the required infrastructure for electricity. According to the locals, even the security personnel at the border outposts cannot do their duties properly as most of the outposts along the inter-State border lack the minimum facilities.

During the interaction with the villagers, Mallik promised to place all the issues before Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi for the grant of the requisite funds for the development of the entire area.

Meanwhile, as Jorhat Police intensified patrolling in the area after the recent eviction drive near Rongham, no untoward incident has been reported lately.

To remove the encroachment on the Tiru Hills Reserve Forest near Rongham village, the Jorhat district administration launched an eviction drive a few days ago and compelled the encroachers from the border Yajang-C village of Mokokchung district of Nagaland to leave.
