JORABAT, Sept 13 - The Brihattar Guwahati Go-Palak Sanstha is set to increase the market price of milk with a view to coping up with the increased cost of production as well as a hike in the prices of cattle feeds like fodder.
Indra Bhandari, president of the Brihattar Guwahati Go-Palak Sanstha, said that the milk price in the city is set to increase as the dairy farmers have decided to hike the price by Rs 1.50 per litre from October 1.
The Go Palak Sanstha is being forced to increase the milk price due to a hike in the prices of cattle feeds, which has affected the cost of milk production. The Government must intervene and control the prices of cattle feeds, Bhandari added.
The Brihattar Guwahati Go-Palak Sanstha, the leading union of dairy farmers in the city, has decided to sell milk to retail sellers at Rs 46 per litre from October 1, which is currently being sold at Rs 44.50 per litre.
The proposed hike by the dairy farmers is going to have a big impact on milk supply in the city and on its outskirts. This is expected to cause a great deal of inconvenience to consumers as the prices of all milk-based sweetmeat will register a hike too.
Meanwhile, Jatindra Nath Deka, president of the Dimoria regional unit of the All Assam Students� Union (AASU), said that the Government should intervene as the dairy farmers are increasing the prices at their own will.
