Mild tremor rocks Manipur

IMPHAL, Oct 3 - An earthquake of 4.6 magnitude hit Manipur around 11.54 am today, the Seismological Observatory of the Manipur University stated. People in Imphal town area felt the mild tremor for a few seconds.

�The earthquake was felt mildly in Imphal of Manipur State,� said Dr Manichandra Sanoujamj of the Seismological Observatory, Earth Science Department of the Manipur University in a press release today. �The epicentre was located at Sawombung subdivision of Imphal East district, located 15 km north-east of the Manipur University.� The depth of the earthquake is estimated at 46 km, the release added.

But there was no report of any damage or loss of life till the filing of this report. Residents of Imphal West, Imphal East, Churachandpur and Thoubal districts reported that they felt the mild tremor. However, people of Senapati, Tamenglong and Ukhrul town said they did not feel the quake.

Manipur had witnessed a strong earthquake measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale on January 4, 2016, which claimed eight lives and damaged many houses and structures including the iconic Ima Keithel buildings here.
