IMPHAL, April 11 � Media persons in Manipur today expressed the need to uplift the working atmosphere of the journalists community.
The issue came up at the Directorate of Information and Public Relations department sponsored day-long workshop on media ethics at Manipur Press Club premises here today. The All Manipur Working Journalists� Union (AMWJU) hosted the workshop.
In the morning session, the Editor of Sanaleibak daily Ahongsangbam Mobi spoke on media ethics framed by Press Council of India while AMWJU general secretary N Philips spoke on media ethics and its local adjustments.
The sessions were chaired by K Madhumangol, former Editor ISTV, a cable TV network while several other journalists including AK Sanaton, N Tombiraj, Robindro, Yumnam Rupachandra, Khelen Thokchom shared their views on the topic.
Several speakers also expressed the need to review the code of conduct for the journalist community which was framed a decade ago. The workshop was held close on the heels of a workshop on Right to Information Act yesterday.
State Chief Information Commissioner Chungkham Birendra was the chief guest at the RTI workshop while Commissioner (Arts and Culture) RK Nimai and additional director of State Academy of Training Kh Ragumani attended as guests of honour. The opening function of the workshop was presided over by AMWJU president Khogendro Khondram.
Speaking as the chief guest at the opening function of the workshop, Birendra criticised the authorities of having poor knowledge of the Act. By not providing the information sought by applicants timely and by not providing the information under the provisions of the Act, the authorities were creating problems on many occasions.
