Midday meal workers gherao Ministers house

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Nov 12 - A group of midday meal workers allegedly gheraoed the residence of Education Minister Siddhartha Bhattacharya located at Ulubari in the city today, even as another group of midday meal workers, later in the day, denied any involvement in the gherao programme.

In a statement, Golapi Boro, president, and Jahanara Begum, secretary of the All Assam Primary School Mid-Day Meal Cook-cum-Helpers Association, said their union was not involved the agitational programme. No member of the union participated in it, they asserted.

We are not aware who carried out the agitation, they said.

Even as some protesters were stated to have been invited for a meeting by the Commissioner & Secretary (Elementary) Education, the union leaders, disapproving of the meeting, said they will not accept any decision taken at tomorrows meet, if at all such a meeting takes place.

An official in the Education Department said several midday meal workers unions have emerged now.

There will be nothing new in what we are going to tell the workers tomorrow. Everything is known already, the official said.

The agitation by the MDM workers continued even after the government ordered an inquiry into the allegations of poor quality of food supplied by NGOs. The new arrangement of supply of food through NGOs has been kept on hold for a month, till the inquiry committee submits its report.
