Mid-day meal cooks demand wage hike

By STAFF CORRESPONDENT

DIBRUGARH, Oct 1 - The Mid-day meal cooks body has opposed the reported plan of the government to bring in NGOs to implement the mid-day meal scheme.

The members of the union who staged demonstration in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner here stated that involvement of NGOs would deprive them of the monthly remuneration that they are receiving now and also deprive the children of good quality cooked food.

It may be mentioned here that a mid-day meal cook receives a mere Rs 1,000 per month as salary.

The district unit of the All Assam Mid-Day Meal Karmachari Union later submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister through the district administration, highlighting its concern.

They demanded that their wages be hiked by the state government. The members of the union fear that they would lose their jobs as the government is gradually handing over the mid-day meal scheme to NGOs for implementation.

The union urged upon the Chief Minister to fulfil the demands of the mid-day meal workers, failing which they would resort to agitation.
