TURA, April 1 - Phulbari MLA, SG Esmatur Mominin has alleged that Direct Bank Transfer (DBT) of job card holders money under MGNREGS was not taking place despite the presence of banks in Phulbari and Chibinang.
Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Generation Scheme (MGNREGS) aims to provide employment to BPL card holders for 100 days a year. However, for some unscrupulous VEC functionaries in the plains belt of Garo Hills it has been a money making tool.
The MLA stated that under the Act, DBTs were to be made to beneficiaries if there is a bank account within five kms from the job card holders village.
VEC office bearers with help of bank officials and Block officers allegedly transfered job card accounts from Chibinang to Phulbari. The distance between the two villages is about eight kms, meaning the job card holders accounts were shown as being beyond five kms, thus making it easy for them to distribute cash instead of doing it through DBT. This has provided plenty of scope for manipulation, said the MLA.
