MGNREGA employees stage protest in Tura

TURA, July 15 - Employees working under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) in Garo Hills today staged a sit-in protest in front of the DC�s office here seeking fulfillment of their demands. The protest is part of the North East MGNREGA Employee Association�s stir to highlight their problems.

The Association has demanded for the regularisation of contractual jobs into permanent government jobs, payment of incentives and facilities at par with government employees and setting up of a separate department for MGNREGA and uniformity of salary in the North East.

The association members stated that the salary for an Additional Programme Officer (APO) varies from one district to the other. While in West and South West Garo Hills the salary for APO is Rs 17,500, the same in South Garo Hills is only Rs 14,000 while in East and North Garo Hills it is Rs 19,300.
